Spinal Decompression To Heal Body Pain

Each disc serves as an elastic pivot for each joint segment of the spine, providing stability and allowing for a relatively wide range of motion in all directions in the lower back and neck. However, when a disc is damaged, loses strength or elasticity or is displaced, it can cause a wide range of painful – and even debilitating – symptoms in the neck and/or back.

The Complex Spine

We have twenty-three discs in our spine – six in the neck, twelve in the middle back and five in the lower back. Damage to a disc can happen with a sharp twist the wrong way, or the day-to-day stress we put on them during the normal course of our busy lives.

There are several terms describing issues with a disc including: a pinched nerve, a degenerated disc, a slipped disc, a herniated disc, a bulging disc and protruding disc. These issues can lead to the following:

  • Neck pain
  • Upper back pain
  • Lower back pain
  • Leg pain
  • Decreased range of motion
  • Numbness
  • Weakness

All too often people suffering from disc problems are presented with two treatment alternatives: a regimen of strong, potentially addictive pain medications or a risky invasive surgery. There are other proven treatment avenues to be explored though, and one of the most effective is spinal decompression with spinal traction.

Both traction and spinal decompression therapy are used with the end goal of relieving pain and creating an optimal healing environment for damaged discs. It’s the same goal as surgical solutions like laminectomy and microdiscectomy, but without the added healing time after surgery, or the risks that come along with every invasive surgery, no matter how minor.

Dr. Kellen Schweitzer and Dr. Branden Ramos provide spinal decompression in Johnstown for patients of all ages and suffering from a wide range of disc issues.
